CHAPTER 16

I am so glad that’s over, Deidre thought, as she walked out of the ring, surrounded by the family whose dog had been given the blue ribbon. That used furniture salesman’s dog, the one Noah showed, was probably the best, but he’ll never know that.

Sorry it had to end with Noah like that, but I warned him not to show that dog. No way would I ever give a dog that pampered a blue ribbon. I love my dogs, but I draw the line at dressing them up and putting expensive jewelry on them.

I mean I like to dress up and wear expensive jewelry, but my dogs? No. That’s ridiculous, but I’ve been in that little twerp’s shop enough times to know he’s outrageous. About time he got his. All he does in that shop is spend time gossiping about people like me. Glad I could be the one to drop a little rain on his parade.

Deidre talked to several people as she made her way out of the building. She drove a nondescript SUV when she came to the dog shows, not wanting to draw attention to her wealth, and she always parked as far away from the other cars as she could.

Years ago, when she’d been at her nail salon, someone had evidently opened their car door into her SUV and left a large dent. Whoever it was had left by the time she got to her car, and she had no recourse but to have someone from the body shop she used to come to her house and fix it.

The inconvenience and the fact whoever had done it hadn’t even left a note had infuriated her, and she’d decided from that moment on, wherever she went, she’d park as far away from other cars as she could. The only silver lining in the experience was that she hadn’t been driving her Rolls-Royce Phantom. That would have been beyond a tragedy and repairing that dent would have been horribly expensive.

She saw that her SUV was by itself on the outer row in the convention parking lot, which pleased her. At least she wouldn’t have to deal with people who wanted to talk to her about the show. She was tired and just wanted to go home, have a glass of wine, and enjoy her dogs.

Deidre walked through the crowd of people and dogs milling around in the parking lot, pleased they were so caught up in what had just happened to their dog in the dog show, that they ignored her. She clicked her fob and opened her trunk. She always came to the dog shows with a large tote filled with bottles of water and energy bars, along with her favorite guilty pleasure, Milk Duds.

She closed the trunk, took her phone out of her purse, clicked on the door opener, and opened the driver’s side door. Deidre stepped into the car, leaving the door open, and turned to the passenger side, setting her purse on the seat.
